The Good News

Like most people, you would probably say you are not perfect. If you think about it, this is quite an admission.
  • It means I'm morally flawed.
  • It means I have some sense of what moral perfection is -- after all I'm comparing myself to that perfection.
Actually these conclusions fit with what God says about us and himself.
  • He is perfect; 'God is light and there is no darkness at all in him.' (1 John -- chapter 1 verse 5)
  • We are not perfect; 'Everyone has sinned and come short of God's glory.' (Romans -- chapter 3 verse 23)
We don't like to be told we need help. But when it dawns on us that our imperfect lives offend God, we begin to feel a need. That's where Jesus comes in. Only he can forgive us because only he could, and did, take the punishment from God which we deserve. He did this when he died on the cross for our sins.

That's why the best-known words of Jesus are:
'For God so loved the world that he gave his only son that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.' (John 3:16)
